Question

Can a fire ant that stings a dogs paw be dangerous? Also, what can we do to treat this. I gave my dog 1 benadryl........He is really kicking his back leg hard. He seems to have calmed down since the benadryl, but moves his foot like he is uncomfortable. My dog is 9 years old German Shepherd. Thank you.

Thanks for the question Kwebster,

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following :

1. While this situation is unpleasant and uncomfortable for your dog it is very rarely dangerous and will pass.

2. Benadryl is often used in this situation by owners and this is a logical treatment. Here is a link to a very good web site which covers the use of benadryl in the dog in depth including dose rates and contraindications : LINK

3. Applying ice to the bites for 5 minutes on and off will help as well.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
