Question

Just purchased a used 2000 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet. Everything has been fine (daily driver). Then I broke my wrist and can't drive/shift. Went to have a friend move car an no electrical power. (Battery is at 5.4 amps) Looking at service records there were complaints of dead battery in past. Recommended service was new ignition switch. Previous owner declined service. Also upon removal of battery noticed battery is new (Aug. 09) and all connections/mount bolts only snug, leading me to believe that the problem was known and the owner was taking the battery in and out often. There was also comments made by two neighbors that after I had turned the car off th rear lighta in the spoiler stayed illuminated.

Answer

The ignition switch is a pretty common failure on these cars, that could be what is making the battery go dead, they stick internally when you take the key out, and sometimes leave circuits on that will kill the battery. I would also have the battery and charging system checked just to make sure they are ok. As for the light in the spoiler, that only comes on with the brake lights and is on the same circuit, I have never seen one stay on by itself, but I have seen a bad brake light switch make them all stay on.

I'm going to put the battery in tomorrow and spray some type of lube into the switch if that is OKAY. Is there any code or procedure to follow when re-installing the battery?

Accepted Answer

Spraying anything in to the key hole will not do anything for the lock. It is the elwctrical switch portion that gose bad, and is onn the very back of the steering lock assembly. It comes as an assembly with the steering lock, and the actuall part you put your key in to is re-used with the new ignition switch. If it is bad the only way to fix it is to replace it. You shoud be ok just purring the battery back in, but you will probably need a radio code
