Question

My 4yr old boxer is having incidences where he went really rigid with his mouth open trying to breath slobbering really bad. He has had 2 more such incidences. These are maybe a few monthes apart. Last night was the latest one. It was almost as if he was having a seizure. It woke us up about 3:30 this morning he was in his kennel. We heard him hitting against the sides. It lasted maybe 2-3 minutes and it was over. I had to give him a shower because he was covered in slobber and pee. He was fine. Running around like it was a game almost hyper.

Answer

Hello,

It does sound as if your dog may be having seizures. There are many different causes of seizures, ranging from hypoglycemia to brain tumors. Often, no cause is found. The dog is then diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. Your dog needs to be examined by a vet. The vet can determine if there is a serious problem which must be treated. If it turns out that your dog has epilepsy, there are medications that control it. You can read more about seizures in dogs at this site:

You should also have your dog's heart checked if he was having difficulty breathing. Boxers are prone to a certain type of cardiomyopathy. If you'd like more on this, let me know.

during this episode Mopar did seem like he was having trouble breathing but his heart was beathing normal. It wasn't beating fast or odd. His legs were straight out and his body was shaking. I have seen kids have seizures and it looked something like that but the kids usually go to sleep afterwards Moe was almost hyper like nothing had even happened or he didn't realize that anything had happened...

Accepted Answer

Mopar is most likely having seizures. The only way to be sure is to have a vet examine him. I'm especially concerned about him because he does seem to have trouble breathing during these episodes. Behavior after a seizure isn't necessarily the same for each individual. It's even possible that the hyperactivity is actually a continuation of the seizure.

If you'd like more information on boxer heart problems, The Amercan Boxer Club has more information on cardiomyopathy on their site:

I hope you'll be able to consult your vet soon.
