Question

Can a spayed bitch have a phantom pregnacy. We have a two year old terrier Mollie cross. We've just adopted a puppy. We were told that the new pup eight weeks old, but we are a little suspcious that she may be a little younger. When the pup arrived she kept trying to feed off Mollie. The pup gets upset when Mollie leaves her alone, they have gelled well togehter and sleep curled up together, Mollie plays with her all the time (though she dose have a playful nature anyway.)Mollie also seems to be concerned about the pup when she goes outside she dosen't leave the pups side and when she comes in from walks she isntantly checks on the wellbeing of the pup. Mollie has suddenly put on a lot of weight. I must also add that we got the pup because we lost our Jack Russel, who was Mollies best friend and for a few weeks after that she wasn't exercising as much. This has changed in the past week, but she always plays a lot with us, our older dog and the new pup.

Dear XXXXXXXX,

No. If she was spayed, she can not have a phantom pregnancy. I am not sure why she is putting on more weight if she is exercising more. Is she eating some of the puppie's food? If she is, that is higher in calories and will cause her to gain weight.

But I have to say...Oh my gosh that is so sweet the way Mollie has bonded with the puppy and is taking care of her. It is probably helping her cope with the loss of her jack russel friend. Mollie now has a job and feels extra important. That is great!!!
