Question

2004 Saab 9-5 with 2.3 turbo and manual transmission. 90,000 miles. Intermittent problem. Engine always idles OK, but sometimes hesitates or even bucks at normal constant speeds. Problem seems to go away if I accelerate moderately to hard. Sometimes the hesitation feels like someone is gently applying the brake for a second or so. I see no problem indications on the dash. There are no other symptoms or visual indications. There are no sounds or smells. Everyone automatically responds "throttle body". Is the throttle body such a common problem? Are there any other possible causes? Should I run injector cleaner for a few tanks?

Hello and welcome!

With the symptoms you describe, I would tend to agree with "throttle body". To know for sure, though, you may want to take it somewhere to have it scanned for codes. Someplace like Auto Zone or other similar store. Even a dealer, if they'll do it for free.

Anyway, there are 2 codes that normally show up with a Throttle body (TB) fault. One is P1231, which basically tells you yes, there is a small problem but it's not a safety issue, and if you can live with it, just let it go.

The other code is P1230, which normally sends the car into "limp home" mode, so the car is drivable, but just barely. In this instance you need to replace the TB.

One thing you can try is removing the intake pipe from over the TB, and cleaning out the bore around where the throttle plate rests. Push it open with your fingers and clean off all the grunge that's accumulated around it. This may or may not help, but it's worth a try! Spray some intake system cleaner (from any auto parts store) onto a rag to do this operation.

Good luck and thanks for checking in with us! If any of this isn't clear, please feel free to write back.
