Question

2000 Protege... transmission drops down a gear, for second or two then shifts back. At 30 mph or 70 mph. very irregular may go for miles or bounce in and out for a while. With or without overdrive, or cruise control Car has 68,000 miles on it.

It sounds like your transmission fluid temp sensor may be causing problems. If the computer thinks the transmission temperature is cold it will try to keep the car in low gear or prevent it going into overdrive until it reaches operating temp. To be sure you would want to bring the vehicle to a shop that has a high end scantool where they can monitor all of the sensors at once otherwise if you want to replace the sensor you need to remove the transmission pan to replace the sensor.
