Question

Hi, my daughters hamster has had some bleeding from her vagina off and on for a few months now. She is 2 years old and other than this has seemed healthy. I at first thought it was a hamster period that we had just not noticed until now. In the past week however she has stopped running in her wheel and is starting to bite occasionally. She has vaginal blood constantly even though it seems to be minimal I think it is increasing. I have learned that she probably has a uterine infection, but that antibiotics rarely work and that a hysterectomy is the solution, however with her age she will likely not make it through the surgery. She is still eating and drinking, but no where near as social as she once was and her abdomen seem to be swollen. Really she just looks to me like she's getting fat, but we are all worried and don't know what the right approach is her. Please help, Hampa is very loved we will do whatever is best for her. Thank You, Worried in Indy

Dear Raina

I am sorry Hampa is so ill.

As you now know, hamsters do not menstrate. Your little gal either has a urinary or uterine infection. It sounds llike the poor baby is in pain.

It is advisable to have her seen by a vet that specializes in exotic pets. I know she is two and not a candidate for surgery but an antibiotic may help.

Please let me know how Hampa is doing. I hope she is treatable and feels better very soon.

warmest best wishes for her,

Terr
