Question

I just bought a 4 month old Pitbull he's nothing agressive and is so sweet but he's not eating and has been throwing up. I feed him beneful. But he was curently mostly indoors but we live in house and we have big yard so he's been out there recently and we've noticed his paws and nails seem damaged and bruised, lots of Mosquitos and I notice like some irritation on skin

Answer

Hello,

I'm sorry your puppy isn't feeling well.

If he's recently been outside, he might have ingested a toxic or other non-food item, and this is causing his inappetance and vomiting. He may also be experiencing an allergic reaction to some of the ingredients in Beneful, especially if it contains corn, gluten, and artificial additives/preservatives, which are common allergens for dogs. Some well recommended brands are Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Candiae, and Newman's Own, available at your major pet supply stores. There are many others, also, just look for meat as the first ingredient and no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors, and no meat by-products.

I'm concerned about your mention of mosquitos, as these are responsible for heartworm disease. Try to keep him indoors only, now, until this problem is resolved, and also do your best to keep mosquitos out of your yard by using safe repellents or a bug zapper, whatever you have available to you.

If his paws and nails seem damaged and bruised, this can be from him biting at them if they itch from mosquito bites, or he could have injured them trying to dig at something outside or getting them stuck under something where he had to pull/scrape to extricate them.

For the moment, withhold food and only offer water; you can add one ounce of children's clear pedialyte to his water bowl and this will help replenish electrolytes he has lost through the vomiting.

Due to your puppy's young age and current symptoms, it would be a good idea to have him evaluated in person by a vet, as soon as possible. He will be treated and definitely diagnosed, and then feeling much more comfortable.

I hope all will be well.

Hey one more thing I've been spraying him with bio spot tick and flea and mosquito treatment I'm wondering if him licking it off has caused him to vomit. And my wife just found puss on bottom head of his penis. I'm just worried cause I have no money to take him to vet so all I can do is home treat him for now but thank you for your help I will accept after this

Hi again, and you're most welcome.

If he's been sprayed with bio spot, yes, the chances he could have licked it off are great, and as you suspect, and it could be causing his vomiting. Applying an effective monthly flea/tick/mosquito preventative sold by the vet or online at a discounted price, like K9-Advantix, is a better idea, and if you apply it on the back of his neck, and down the middle of his back, as directed, he can't reach to lick it.

Pus on the head of the penis may indicate a urinary tract infection or skin irritation from the flea/tick spray or something he's contacting outside, when he sits. For the moment, gently clean the area with a cool, damp cloth and keep him indoors. He really should be evaluated by a vet, in person, but I completely understand your financial limitations at this time. Perhaps contacting these organizations (if you're located in the U.S.) will get you help in paying for the vet fees and medications:
