Question

After realizing too late what that alarm meant when i turned the ignition on, it meant low oil, I continued to run my twin Mercury 150 optimax engines for several hours. Do they cut off when the oil is completely gone, before they seize up? Or did i fry them completely? If so, what if anything can be done? Larry (aka dumb #$$ )

Answer

Hello Seafox,

Your Optimax has only the alarm horn, it will not shut down with no oil.
a steady horn indicates no oil or over heat,

You should fill right up with oil, both motors level and hope that no damage has occured.

Good luck with this, if there seized they will need rebuild.

The alarm (beep) i got was intermittent ( on/off, on/off). Are you saying there is also a constant on alarm? I have refilled the reservoirs. Should i just run them and see what happens. Thanks for your help!!

Accepted Answer

Seafox,

An intermitten alarm as you describe indicates low oil, yes there is a constany alarm indictes over heat/ no oil.

I would run them as you didnt get the constant alarm, you are Lucky!

Good luck

Scott
