Thanks. Not being there and the fact engine will not crank makes this a little difficult but I will give you my thoughts.
You could have had something as simple as the alternator fail. A bad alternator can start making noises before it quits . If yours did, the battery went low and the required volts went too low to keep engine running and now the battery is too low to crank the engine. This would be a good thing per say. You can try jumping the car to see if it will crank.
Th big concern I have are the noises you began to hear and then engine quit. It is possible the timing belt broke . The timing belt needs replace every 60K. If it broke AND the engine will not crank now is a sign of possible severe damage. The reason is because this is an intereference engine. This means that is the timing belt were to break, the pistons hit the valves bending them and locking up the engine.
You will see in the picture below a cover in front of the 2 gears at top of engine. If you can remove the 2 top bolts and pull cover back enough to look at belt, you can see if it is broken or not. the squeaking noises etc could have been the rubber timing belt coming apart.
I would try a jump start. If enegine will NOT try and crank with jump start. Stop. You then more than likely have bad engine.
I do not like to give possible bad news but i do have to give correct answers. lets hope it is just the alternator that quit.
Yes, the whining noise could have been the belt or the belt tensioner pulley starting to go. This is classsic sound when a problem is developing with a timing belt. I am not saying you have a bad t Belt, but very good possibilty. The signs kicd of add up/
I did use incorrect terminology. I did not mean the engine is bad but if the belt did break, you would have bent valves. this would require to have new valves put in the head OR a remanufatured head put on the engine. The lower 1/2 engine will be ok.
I can not give exact numbers but the labor rate is by the book
Labor is= $11.8 hours to replace the head. the reman head could be around $400. Timing belt kit $75, fluids and extras $100
At a shop rate of $80 per hour the job could be as high as $1500.
At this point you may want to consider a used engine or reman engine but both couild be $2000 +/-
