Question

Guinea pig/tumor.I have a guinea pig who has a huge sore on his shoulder. 8 months ago, the vet said there was a mass in his stomach and that she thought it was cancer and that he didn't have long to live. We got control of the stomach problems with herbs and he's very upbeat, eating massively and seems to enjoy life. We know that his days are numbered but we'll give him what he needs until he stops eating or gets depressed. A sore started growing on his shoulder a couple of months ago and it keeps growing. At first it itched & he scratched it until it bled. We put pet wound lotion on it and kept it clean and covered. He stopped scratching it so we uncovered it but cleaned it twice a day. It stopped bothering him until now. Now the bottom of the sore is rubbing when he walks and seems to make him not want to walk. I think if we put a dressing on it, he'll be able to move around without irritating it. Any suggestions? I have pics of sore if you need them.

Optional Information

Pet's Gender: Male
Pet's Age: 7
Type of Animal: Guinea pig

Already Tried:
When the sore first came, we cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and put neosporin on it. An expert here said to stop the neosporin and put Harrison wound lotion on it. We did that and then covered it with everything from ouchless bandages to sterile pads. We always had to cover bandages/pads with wrap (like ace bandage wrap but lighter weight.) He got used to it but didn't like it. As soon as the sore stopped itching, we took the wrap off but kept cleaning it and putting the lotion on it. He liked that better. Somehow we need to keep the sore from rubbing on his towels as he walks. We know things are looking bleak but we're not going to take him to vets who don't know much about piggies (which is all we got here.) We don't want to stress him out. We will take him to a vet when it's time for him to go. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Hello,

I remember working with you earlier this year when Satain had stomach problems. Is this Satain who has the problem now?

A picture of the sore would be helpful. You can upload one by clicking on the little green tree icon in the tool bar.

Thank you.

It is indeed Satain. After your previous help, we continued caring for him with herbs, etc. Then we found out about bio-sponge which we purchased and give to him daily. He did 180 degree turn around and the diaherra stopped and he started eating like a pig <smile.> He's been doing great since although his back legs don't work very well but it doesn't seem to bother him. He gets so excited around food time and loves playing with his stuffed rabbit. He plays tug of war with his roommate when the wheatgrass gets set down. The sore is getting huge. I'll send a picture when I get home from work. I keep thinking that this is going to be his last week but he keeps going like the energizer bunny. I don't want to stress him out by taking him to a vet who doesn't know anything about piggies. Thanks for your help and I'll send a picture in about 1.5 hours. -Carol

Something went wrong because the picture isn't here. Let's try once more. The tree icon is right next to the one that says "You Tube" in the tool bar. click on the tree and yous hould get a window where you can browse. Click on what you want to browse - desktop, etc. Then another window should open with further instructions. After you select your picture in the second window, you'll click on insert. thent he photo should upload. If it doesn't work this time, we'll have to try something else. I'll check back in a few minutes to see if it's here.

I'm also going to give you my thoughts without seeing the photos. From your description, I suspect that Satain may have skin cancer, possibly a melanoma. Since you said he got used to the bandages before, the best solution may be to do that again. Put something lubricating on the sore - petroleum jelly (Vaseline), plain Neosporin ointment, or something with a similar texture. That will soothe the area and protect it from being rubbed by the bandage. I'd cover that with gauze, then wrap it in the Ace bandage type wrap. VetWrap is a good brand that isn't too heavy. It may be what you're using already. There are limited ways to bandage such a sore, and this may wel be the best solution. If Satain can adjust to that again, it may give him a little more time.

I wish I knew of a treatment you could try, either conventional or alternative, but it seems you have already tried almost everything. You've gone to great lengths to help Satain. A veterinary oncologist may be able to remove the sore, but an elderly guinea pig is a poor candidate for surgery due to the risks of anesthesia. Such treatment would also be expensive, and you'd probably ahve to travel to find an oncologist. However, if that's something you're interested in, let me know and I'll find a directory for you.

Otherwise, you'll just have to do your best to cover and bandage the sore. As long as Satain eats with gusto and plays with his friends, he still has some quality of life. You'll have to judge when the bad outweighs the good. I know that you've given him a good life.
