Question

My 1998 S70 Manual shift has suddenly become harder to shift into 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears while the engine is running and the car is moving. There is no noticeable gear noise or grinding, but those gears seem a little "sticky" as I shift into them. If I put the shift in Neutral, and move the shifter to the left once, the next up shift seems to line up better and go into gear without resistance. Does this mean I need a new Clutch Assembly? Or simply an "adjustment" to the clutch cable? Or a new Clutch Disc and Release Bearing?

Answer

Hello and thank you for your quesetion... have you found your brake fluid low at all recently? i have seen a great number of throw out bearings (hydraulic ones) failing lately. Obviously if your doing the throw out bearing, it should be done with the clutch at the same time. It is possible you got some air in the system somehow, so you could try to bleed it out some. My suspision is that you have a weak/failing throw out bearing. This would require a transmission remove and reinstall.

Your suspicion about the Throw-Out bearing is probably correct.

One question: When I replace the Throw-Out bearing what other parts should be replaced at the same time?

Thank you for you help.

Accepted Answer

The clutch, pressure plate. I do not recall this car using a pilot bearing.... ohh ya, REAR ENGINE seal... other than that... not sure what else would be a good idea at the same time.
