Question

I have a 95 mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo Front Wheel drive. 2.0L DOHC 4g63 engine. my problem is that my coil that fires cylinders 1 and 4 stops working. Car runs awesome otherwise. I have replaced both coils already, but no help. connections to the coil look good, no frayed wires, and so on. I can get it to start working again for a while by sometimes pulling one of the spark plug wires that is firing while it is running, and then pushing it back down just before the car dies. Then the car seems to get a slight surge, and boom all cylinders are firing again. I have been all over looking for an answer. Some say it could be a cam sensor or a crank sensor. I unplugged the cam sensor while it was running on all 4 cylinders, and no change still fires on all 4 cylinders just with poor performance. If it was a bad crank sensor I would assume the car would not run at all. Could a bad computer body control do this?

Hi,
You are correct about the cam and crank sensors not being an issue. The vehicle would not run if the crank sensor was bad, and the cam sensor only gives camshaft orientation to begin timing at startup.

Your ignition coil has two feeds from the power transistor pack for, you guessed it, cylinders 1+4 and cylinders 2+3.
It sounds as if the transistor for 1+4 inside the power transistor pack has burned out or the engine speed loop has come unhooked (1+4 loop through it, wiring is at the firewall center).
The power transistor is mounted just beside the ignition coil pack, mounted vertically.
Check to see if you have voltage signal to fire from pin 8 (wire black with white stripe).
You can compare to pin 1 (blue/black) which is for cylinders 2+3.
If you don't have pulse, your transistor is burned out.
If you do, the transistor is good, and your wiring to the coil is bad. .

For reference, the power transistor is part # MD189747 and lists for $161.45 from Mitsubishi. I would not recommend using an aftermarket part, should you need to replace it.

If you need further explanation, just ask.
Thanks

Answer

... and to answer your question I missed, no it is not possible for the computer to fail in this way. It sends a fire signal based on crank signal input and the power transistor divides it between the two cylinder pairs.
You will only be looking at the transistor or the wiring between it and the ignition coils.

Sorry I missed that in the first post.
Thanks
