Question

I have a 2002 225 optimax. I was going around 45mph when i heard an uncommon sound from my motor. Sounded like something was lose or a loud rattle. Could say like the motor was knocking but i pray thats not it. any ides what it could be? No smoke, oil, steam, boiling or unusual heat coming from the walls. Never had an ounce of problems in the past. Oil was full. I slowed down and idled back about ten minutes when it stalled. wouldnt start but after two hours of driving back with trolling motor, at the ramp it sounded like it would of started but i turned the key back. Stuck on Lake Saint Claire is never fun. Thanks

Hello Coach,

 

As you say your not good with motors, I would suggest you bring it in to Mercury dealer.

 

By the sounds of it I'm guessing the engine has scored a piston or two. This would be easy enough for the dealer to check out.

The first thing they would do is hook up the laptop and run Mercury's cds program to pull any codes that may have been set.

Then they will pull the spark plugs, inspect them for aluminum and do a leak down test. If they find a reason to, they will pull a cylinder head to inspect.

 

Sorry it doesn't sound to good.
