Question

My kitten has had some bleeding around it's anus. I have taken him to the vet and the vet gave a course of antibiotics saying that it was probably internal parasites but that has made no difference. Now over the last few days he has become very lethargic and not running around much. Before he was very active. Also today I noticed that he was breathing rapidly and had an elevated heart rate. He is very young only 11 weeks and I am very worried about him.

Info Request

Did the vet give him a de-worming product, or check a fecal sample?

Has he had any vaccinations yet?

Did you have him tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)?

Thanks,
Lynn

He has had a worming treatment. No jabs as yet because he has been on two courses of antibiotics. When we got him he had cat flu but we caught it early so it was limited to his eye and was cleared up with some drops. Then he had the bleeding so we took back to the vet again who gave us more antibiotics but it has made no difference, he is still bleeding around his anus and now with this lethargy I'm getting concerned. That said though, he was very lethargic yesterday then about 10:30PM he was very active running around like nothing was wrong. But today he's been sleeping all day.

Hi,

Your kitty needs to be seen by your vet again. The lethargy and elevated heart rate are definite causes for concern. If your vet did not actually check a fecal sample it would be a good idea to do so, to determine if there are still any parasites or if the wormer was the appropriate one. I would also advise testing for the feline viruses as these will cause a variety of health problems in kittens. Here are links to pages about them:

Your kitten could also simply have another infection of some sort. Whatever the problem is he needs to see a vet again.
