Question

My dog a mixed beagle is hanging his head and his back is humped up. He is taking very small steps. It seems that he is having a hard time walking around and going up and down stairs. I first tought he had something wrong with his back legs or hips, but as I was petting him and I lifted his head up to look at me he started to do the yelping really bad. This just started yesterday and he seems to just start yelping. He will follow us aroung the house acting really wierd. Not sure what to do.

Answer

Hi, thanks for your question. The symptoms you are describing are most consistent with back pain. In small breed dogs, when we see reduced activity, stiffness, and arched back, and reluctance to eat/drink, but no vomiting/diarrhea, we are usually suspicious of back or neck pain.

The most common reason for back pain / neck pain in a dog is Intervertebral Disc Disease, which is a condition where the cartilage discs between the vertebrae can bulge and put pressure on the spinal cord, leading to pain, muscle spasms, and stiffness.

You will need to have him seen by a veterinarian, in order to have a thorough physical exam, and possibly some x-rays. Then, as long as nothing else is identified on x-rays, some pain medicine, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatories may be prescribed, along with strict rest for 2 to 3 weeks. This is usually effective for most cases like this.

What do you give him for the pain? We can not afford to take him to the Vet right now times are tuff. What can I give him to make his muscles relax and to hepl with the pain

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, there's nothing that is available over the counter for muslce relaxation - and over the counter anti-inflammatories are not usually recommended due to safety concerns with stomach irritation or kidney problems at higher doses.

Ordinarily, I recommend against the use of Aspirin in dogs, because some dogs are quite sensitive to the side effects - most notably, stomach irritation or ulceration. Now, with the buffered form of aspirin, many veterinarians have had good results in dogs, so there's some clinical usefulness for Aspirin. I still avoid it whenever possible.

The usual recommendation is to give 5 mg per pound of body weight. I would not go higher than that, to avoid risking stomach irritation and ulceration.

Again, the best advice I can give you is to seek veterinary care, perhaps find a vet who is willing to take payments every 2 weeks.
