I have a 1994 Johnson 88 hp outboard. Just recently, The tachometer is either fluctuating or not working at all and it appears that the motor is no longer charging the battery. Can you help?

Hello,
Sound like the water cooled regulator on the top of the engine block my be bad. There are other things to check like wiring and stator but this would be the place to start as it send the tach signal and converts the stator a/c voltage to d/c to keep the battery charged. An Amp meter and test tank are recommended as the engine needs to ran at a High RPM in order to test. May be a job for the local marine dealer.
The flywheel need to be pulled to replace it as well.

Thank you and good luck!
