Hello,

What antibiotic were you initially treated with?
Was a urine culture done?
How long were you treated?

I dont have the name to hand but it was specifically for urinary related infections.

Urine culture was done, showed some blood but otherwise clear.

at this point I had 2 weeks of antibiotics with about 2 weeks gap between both doses.

Answer

Thank you for the additional information.

First, I want to confirm that a urine culture was done. A urine culture does not look for blood. A urinalysis would demonstrate blood, etc. A urine culture is sent to the lab and results do not come back for 2 days. The culture determines exactly what bacteria is causing the infection and what antibiotic will get rid of the infection.

It does sound like you are having symptoms of a bladder or prostate infection. A urine culture would demonstrate a bladder infection but not always a prostate infection. If you have a prostate infection (prostatitis), treatment often needs to be for 4-6 weeks. The prostate is tender on exam if you have this type of infection.

Kidney stones are another possibility. If the stone is in the bladder, it would cause irritative symptoms (pain, frequent urge to urinate), microscopic blood in the urine.

I think the next step is to return to your doctor, have another urinalysis with urine sent for culture, prostate exam and likely a referral to a urologist.

Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

thank you. Yes the culture was done (sent to lab and received 2 weeks later) but didnt show up anything. I also had a prostate exam but it also did not show up anything. I should probably take this to a urologist at this point? thanks again

Accepted Answer

Yes it sounds like all of the correct workup was done.
Another course of antibiotics would not be warranted at this point (although urine cultures are frequently negative with prostatitis).

I believe the next step for you would to see a urologist.
The only other consideration would be whether this is bowel related. This would not cause pain with urination, but could cause discomfort in the abdomen. If you are having a change in bowel habits, I would discuss this with your doctor as a possible cause.
