Answer

If you did the initial cleaning and are now left with a residue, the residue can be removed using phosphoric acid (get it in the tile section at Home Depot and follow the directions). If you didn't do the initial cleaning and are left with mounds of grout on the tile, then you would be better off removing the tile and starting over.

without removing the tile is there anyway to get this mess off? My husband overloaded himself and took too much on himself and fell asleep. He did not do the initial cleaning. The tile is not cheap and if I can remove the excess grout without destroying $300 in tile I would be very happy. Would muratic acid help (sp?) the tile is a natural rock scabus. pls pardon the spelling

Accepted Answer

I would not use muriatic acid to take a mass of grout off,it would take too much and it might discolor your tile. Phosphoric is far less harsh. Here's what you can do. Get a diamond shaped grout scraper from your local tile supply, and scrape a v shaped grove in the grout joints, then scrape the surface of the tile with a 3" floor scraper ( it uses a sharp blade and elbow grease). Once you have removed all but the residue, clean with phosphoric acid, let dry overnight and then regrout and clean immediately with sponge and water at least twice.
