Question

Greetings, I am taking care of my elderly father-in-law (87) who is terminal with mesothelomia cancer. Last Sunday he came down with a UTI. We took him him and the put him on Ciprofloxin. He finished up on Friday. Today, as I was reading his room for the evening, I went to dump his urinal, and the urine was as dark as coffee....he complains of a back ache, but I thought it was the mesothelomia...I hate to take him into emergency and have him wait for 4-6 hours before he is seen....what should I do?

Hello XXXXXXXXXX,

Welcome to JustAnswer.

Is he acting normally otherwise? In other words, does he have any other symptoms besides back ache and dark urine? Fever? Confusion? Not eating or drinking?

He has not been eating for the last couple of days; he says that food has no taste. I do give him Scandishakes (800 calories) 2 and sometimes 3 times a day. But the last several days he hasn't been eating very much solids and says that he feel nauseaus. He is acting normaly otherwise...and getting him to drink is very hard....

Accepted Answer

Hello,

His urine is probably dark because he is not drinking. He must start drinking some water, otherwise he will end up in the hospital with dehydration. The other thing could be the bladder infection has not cleared up, or his kidneys are also involved.

For tonight, try to get him to drink any kind of clear liquids. Hot, cold, whatever he likes. Maybe some herbal teas with sugar. He really needs to get the fluids in. The antibiotic could have caused him to be nauseous to begin with, but now he may be still feeling nausea because of dehydration.

He should see his doctor tomorrow, definitely. But for this evening and tonight try to get him to understand that he just has to drink some water.
