Question

I have a 2003 jeep liberty, automatic, 4-wheel drive, 3.7 L. I run a rural mail route that is very bumpy and dusty with it. While running mail The clock went out, and I did not realize anything was wrong. I kept hearing a beep and the battery light came on. the jeep died, in about 15 min. then would not start again. I got a jump and it ran another hour without problems. I shut it off and started it back up again in 1/2 hr and the battery lite came on again, but I was able to drive it 15 minutes home. Husband checked: Had 12.4 V on the battery cold and 14.1 V running and there was no battery lite on or check engine lite. Battery cables and battery posts seem fine, and were cleaned. He ran a diagnostics it showed the following codes: P1682 and P1684 with a pending code of P0562 Can anyone help since the battery volts are in range. Was wondering if this could possibly be a PCM Problem.

Hello, All three of the codes listed are related to low battery voltage, what you most likely have is either a failing alternator, failing pcm(which controls alternator output) or a wiring problem between the alternator and the pcm. Since you don't have any codes for generator field control problems the most common cause is the alternator, it's very rare for us to see pcm failures or wiring problems causing these issues and not setting codes for it. Most likely if you replace the alternator it'll take care of the problem, but with this being an intermittent problem it's going to be hard to accurately diagnose it until it finally fails completely.
