I have a 1999 toyata tacoma 4x4. For some reason it doesnt seem to be going into four wheeel drive. When I shift the level into 4 high the dash light does not come on and the front wheels are not driving. I checked the fuse for the four wheel drive and its good.

Answer

Hi XXXXX. Thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer. There is an actuator on the transfer case and another pn the front differential. It is common for these to go bad. Start with the one on the front diff, have someone put it in 4wd will you tap it with a hammer. Let me know what happens

Is this just a push button 4wd? Do you know if it has A.D.D

It's the A.D.D. There is no push button. I was looking in the book and it shows a relay for the ADD but doesnt say where its at. Kind of looks like it on the drivers side fire wall but can't find it.

Thanks

Just so I'm Straight. You engage 4wd with a lever, and it has diff switch.

Ok. There are quite a few parts that may be the issue, the most common is... There is a 4wd position switch located toward the top of the transfer case (drivers side) It has a 2 pin connector. This tells the ecu that you switched the transfer case into 4wd,and to apply power to the vacuum switching valve, then the vacuum engages the front diff actuator.

Once you find it, unplug it and jump the 2 pins with a wire or paper clip. Then retest the 4wd... Let me know

I found 2 switch valve on top of the tranfer case they are side by side about 2 inches apart. One had gray plasitc connectors and the other one was blue.

Do they both have plugs, or does one have a wire?

Was that the switch, furthest to the rear?

No it was the valve towards the front of the vehicle. Do you want me to try other one?

I have also checked out the ADD solensoids and they seem to be OK. Both have a OHM reading of 40 and when power is applied air flows from the filter side out the dischage side of the valve.

Ok, thats all working ok. Do you have a vacuum pump?

I have a hand vacuum pump

Posted by Jason 119 days and 22 hours ago.

Info Request

You need to apply vacuum to the front diff actuator, this will test to see of its working.

Which side do I apply it and do we need to move the vehicle while doing so?

Posted by Jason 119 days and 22 hours ago.

Info Request

Apply vacuum directly to diapham with the selector is 4wd, you should hear it clunk into place. The truck may have to move for it to engage. Or you can remove the whole thing, and test it in your hand.

Here is what I did. I applied vacuum to both lines that come out of the solensoid valves and go to the diapham. I tried the first line and nothing happen. I then tried the other line, I applied vacuum to it but before we tried it the owner had a guestion and I had to sent the pump down and lost vacuum. Now all for some reason it started going into 4x4. We tried it a few of time and the couple of time we could hear a clicking sound like a rely clicking and the the 4x4 light came on. Now as soon as you shift it into 4x4 the light come right on.

Accepted Answer

The actuator is sticking, and you moved it with the vacuum. If its a customers car, I would replace the actuator. I was gonna say the actuator from the start, but wanted to go through the diag to be sure. it'll work for now, but will malfunction again.
