Question

My cat has a fever and high blood sugar. The vet said to make sure he keeps eating and drinking water. What can I feed him if he doesn't seem to want to eat anything? Is canned Tuna a bad choice? Can I take his temperature with a digital ear thermometer? What is the best way to get antibiotic suspension down without choking him?

Info Request

Hi there,

Is your cat diabetic?

How high is his temp?

You need a retal thermometer.

What antibiotic is he taking?

Thanks,

Terri

I don't have a rectal thermometer, is there anyway to tell if is temperature comes down without taking his temperature? His veterinarian prescribed 4ml of Cephalexin 250mg/5ml 3 times a day. I wasn't sure I could get a capsule down him. He's a large cat (about 18.5lbs) I gave him 2 doses yesterday.

Answer

Dear friend,

I am sorrry your boy is not feeling well.

Offer him the liquid from the tuna can or milk to drink.

Apply cold compresses to his abdomen and underarms to get the fever down,

Normal is 100 - 102.5 You can try the digital under his arm. It may not be accurate but it is a guide.

Cats are attracted to smelly foods - the stronger the better. If he wants tuna, give it to him.You can also try fancy feast, clam juice or baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

.

If his tummy needs a rest, feed baby food with no onion or garlic for a few days.

If he wont eat, and your cat is not diabetic begin by giving him two droppers (cc size) of unflavored pedialyte every ten minutes for an hour. Next water down(plain water) canned cat food or baby food chicken or turkey with no onion or garlic and give only one dropper every ten minutes for another hour. Wait two hours and repeat both. When he feels hydrated he will lick up the gruel on his own.

Give him droppers of unflavored pedialyte a few times a day to make sure he stays hydrated.

Here is how to pill him:

Please let me know how he is doing. I will always be here for you.

I hope he feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

To give my cat liquid antibiotic or pedialyte (good idea to hydrate with!) do I try to put it in the side of his mouth so he won't choke or spit it out? He's hard for me to control and give medicine. I don't want ot scare him by restraining him too much. I'm afraid he'll just hide.

Accepted Answer

Yes put in on the side where there is a space betwen his teeth.

Liquid is much easier than a capsule to administer.

Wrap him in a towel like a mummy with just his head out.

Follow any meds with droppers of tuna water so he sees something good comes too.

Good luck and please let me know how he is doing.
