Question

I have an 18 lb. grey sweetheart of a cat who showed up at my door about 7 months ago. He is around 4 years old the vet said. He has one eye which is often watering / gunk filled and the area around swollen. The eye only recently started opening more fully but on any given day it is swollen and weeping. The eye ball is a little mishapen, the retina is very dilated and pointed down. I thought I could see what looked like puncture wound. He eats, loves my outdoor cats and eats well, but shakes his head and washes his eye with his paw. The Vets said they don't think he is suffering and I can't afford what I image it would cost to have the eye removed. Any idea what this could be caused from and what I should do? I already used several antibiotics when he first arrived.

Accepted Answer

He is lucky he is getting help from you for his problem. It does sound like the eye may have a deep infection.

Punctures may be from a fight with another animal, an accident with a tree branch, a car impact etc.

I'm not sure I agree with your vet about him not suffering knowing how awful it feels to have debris in the eye or an eye infection.

Eye removal might be a good choice if the eye has no vision to it.
