Question

My fiance and i sent our homeowners rebate form in this last march, his check came in within the first 12 weeks, which was 4,000. I would be recieving the other 4,000, i called to make sure they had the correct address, although we did send our information in the same envelope, i thought id ask to make sure, because i never recieved mine. They said they had no information on the fact that i even bought a home, so i resent the form again July 4th, i called monday to see if they are having problems, and they said its been under review since July 6th, they are looking over my 2008 taxes. I have my taxes done prefessionally every year, i am just concerned on what will happen next and if i should be worried.

Unfortunately - that is a reality - the normal time for the IRS to review the claim for first time home buyer's credit is about four months.

In some situation it takes longer.

I think to sent two tax returns in the same envelope - that was a mistake - because the IRS most likely treated your tax return as a supplemental document for your finance's tax return - and not as a separate tax return.

There is a little you may do to speed up the process.

You may continue to call or you may visit your local IRS office (if that convenient for you) - no appointment needed. Let me know your state - and will find location.

Unless you get any information from the IRS or you would know the reason for delay - you may only wait. At least you know that your tax return was received and is in the process.

Sorry if you expected a different answer.

Let me know if you need any help.

Answer

Please verify that you sent a copy of the HUD form from your settlement.

If you did not - you might add it to your amended tax return.

Lots of people reported that they are receiving the credit up to 5-6 months after sending amended tax return.

It seems as the IRS makes some actions to verify that all taxpayers are eligible for the credit. That understandable considering the amount of credit.

I wish you the best.
