Question

I have a 6 1/2 yr old dachshund. On Sept 16th I woke to blood all down my hallway. I assumed the dog had thrown up. Again this happened on October 2nd. On October 7th I found my dog in the garage with diarhea with blood everywhere. I rushed him to the hospital. When I got him to the hospital the diarhea had stopped. Please note the blood was very red and the consistency of jelly. They took a blood test and fecal test. He is on a bland diet of chicken and rice. Today the vet called and said the tests came back normal. She thinks that it might be colitis. And suggested a colonscopy test costing $1500. Would the fecal test rule out parasites? Would the blood tests rule out cancer? Could there be any other possibilities? This definitely is not normal. Thank you!

Accepted Answer

It certainly sounds like classic colitis with the red blood and mucous, jelly-like consistency of the stool. An endoscope is the way to diagnose it, but you can see if he responds to medication and diet changes as well. Usually sulfasalazine and metronidazole are used to treat colitis and adding fiber to the diet will show resolution of the symptoms. Also, labwork and xrays are normal with this problem.

To answer your questions, a fecal test would rule out parasites. There are no blood tests, unfortunatley, to diagnose cancer in pets.

Other possibilities would mostly be diet related - if he ate a bone, a rawhide treat, table food, etc. can cause these signs. Irritable bowel is a remote possibility but usually doesn't come on suddenly and the patient has chronic vomiting and diarrhea.
