Question

The automatic transmission experiences delay of up to 30 seconds when going from park to drive, especially after not having been driven for a while or when it is relatively warm outside. What is causing this, and what's the price to fix it?

Answer

Sounds like you need a trans flush the cleaner you get it the better it will do. I know it scares you to think of a transmission rebuid but I really think a flush will help. You may even be low on fluid right now. Get a new filter and complete flush.

Also it will cost about 100 bucks to have a shop do it. Maybe a bit more.

The transmission fluid level is fine. I've heard that it's risky to flush it out.... Is that true?

Thinking about it, may I ask if you notice slipping in the gears or going into overdrive?

Risky depends on wether its been done it when it has needed it before. if you have 200000 miles on it and never had a change I would be scared but around 120000 and there has been a change before I wouldnt worry about it.

I haven't noticed slipping in the gears, but the overdrive light flashes if "drive" doesn't engage properly (car moves forward, but not smoothly). The car has very low mileage -- only 43K. I am the 3rd owner -- owned before by an elderly woman before who did not drive it much. I am assuming it has never been flushed before. Thanks for your deliberation in answering.
