Question

I have a male boxer and he is walking around with his mouth open which is not usual it just started this evening and when he drinks water it is running out the sides of his mouth. He is in normal behavior and wants to eat but he is having slight trouble swallowing ans seems that it is his tongue? What can be wrong with him?

Answer

Hello. Although I can not make a diagnosis without an exam it sounds as if your guy may have trigeminal neuritis. Trigeminal neuritis typically affects a dog's ability to close his/her mouth and they have trouble swallowing. Here is a brief description:

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/trigeminal-neuritis-in-dogs/page1.aspx

The good news is that this condition is typically self-limiting and dogs can have a full recovery. If he is unable to eat he may need temporary supportive care and/or feeding tubes.

Often wet food mushed into meat balls can be more easily eaten by dogs with this condition. They can learn to toss them into the back of the throat and then swallow.

I recommend you make an appointment with your veterinarian tomorrow to have this diagnosis confirmed and to discuss any further care he may need.

I hope this helps!

would this come on all of a sudden. He was fine this morning and last night. we noticed it when we came home from work this afternoon. His mouth is open but not wide and he has not lost control of his muscles. It seems as though the back of his tongue is swollen and he is tender to the touch top lip

Accepted Answer

Hello again. Yes this can come on very quickly. However if you feel the back of his tongue and upper lip may be swollen I recommend you take him to a veterinarian tonight. Certainly if this is an allergic reaction we do not want it to get worse. He may need a steriod injection on top of the benadryl you've already given.
