Question

Hello. I'm writing because I have a question if I need an antipsychotic. There are times when I don't feel like I fit in with friends or co-workers. I often ask them if they are mad at me, or I'll blurt something out. I had one episode 6 months ago where I thought a co-worker spit in my food and I got all upset about it and said something bout it to him. The reason I thought he spit in my food was because when he gave me my sandwhich he was laughing and had just got done talking about spitting in people's food. Do you think i'm delusional at times or could it just be insecurity. Please help.

Hello:

I can understand how distressing this situation is to you. It sounds like you have frequent feelings in which you feel judged, or teased, or betrayed. The symptoms you describe do not meet the criteria for psychosis so you do not need an anti-psychotic.

My suggestion is that you contact a therapist who you can trust (feel free to shop around and do a telephone interview before you actually see the therapist) and start working on your thoughts and beliefs about yourself. You need a cognitive-behavioral therapist. If you have no insurance, you can also get a book about managing your thoughts by David Burns, MD called FEELING GOOD.

Here is the Amazon.com link to this book if you want to buy it:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_3_7?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=feeling+good+david+burns

If you like the book there is an accompanying workbook you may find helpful. The good news is that you don't need to go on feeling this way. There is help for you. Please take it. I wish you well. Good luck.
