Question

I'm trying to load Ubuntu 9.04 onto my computer (an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.26 GHz, and 1.96 GB of RAM) that currently uses Windows XP Service Pack 3 so that I can dual boot. After starting the Ubuntu disc, I received the following message which I don't understand. The message reads: "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this. (EE) CHROME (0): No valid modes found (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." My question is: what do I need to do to solve this "error" so that I can continue loading Ubuntu onto my computer?

What is the exact model number of your computer? Do you have a specialized PCI graphics card (Nvidia would be my first guess.)

Thanks.

Here's a slight technical disclaimer on this one. Ubuntu installs can be difficult, and I cannot promise you an answer, but I will work hard to figure out the issue and assist you. If I cannot provide you a solution, I will open up the question to allow other Experts to assist you.

1. No exact computer model as it was built at a local computer shop in my town in the early 2000's.
2. Can't find any info as to a specialized PCI graphics card in my control panel.

Okay, well as it is after midnight here and I want you to get an answer quickly, I'll opt out, if you are around tomorrow, we can work on this if no one has responded to you. I've done hundreds of linux installs, but I know you would rather have an answer sooner or later.

Info Request

Hello,

In XP click Start then Run then type Dxdiag and press Enter. Then in the application that appears click the Display tab and let me know the make and model of graphics card/chip that is installed.

John P.,

On the Display tab, the following was recorded:

Device
Name: VIA/53G Uni Chrome IGP (note: could be VIA/S3G - hard to tell if it is a "5" or an "S"
Manufacturer: VIA/53G (or VIA/S3G)
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 32.0 MB
Current display Mode: 800X600 (32 bit) (60 Hz)

Drivers
Main Driver: vtdsp.dll
Version: 6.14.0010.0226 (English)
Date: 6/1/2005
DDI Version: 9 (or higher)

Hope this gives you the information you need.

Hi David L, I thought I was sending to the first responder when I replied earlier today to your request. I thought my reply went through, but I will send it again to you in case my first response did not go through.

So, the Display information I sent was the following:

DEVICE
Name: VIA/53G Uni Chrome IGP (or, VIA/S3G Uni Crome IGP) - I think it is a "5" but hard to be sure that it wasn't a "S".
Manufacturer: VIA/53G (or VIA/S3G)
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 32.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 800X600 (32 bit) (60 Hz)

DRIVERS
Main Driver:vtdsp.dll
Version: 6.14.0010.0226 (English)
Date: 6/1/2005

DDI Version: 9 (or higher).

I hope the above information allows you to come up with some type of solution to my problem so I can continue loading Linux on my computer.

Thanks

Answer

Ok thank you. That particular card has been an issue for both installation and after installation. Just to get Ubuntu installed, try installing in text mode. This way graphics is not a requirement for installation and most of the time you can get a graphics display once you have the operating system installed.

Would a CD for Ubuntu have a way of accessing a text only installation? I don't recall seeing anything that would allow installing in only a text mode.

Accepted Answer

When you download Ubuntu there is an "Alternate Disk" that you can download and use for installation that has this option:
