Question

do u have to take the head off a 93 325i m50 vanos motor to replace the chain guide that the tensioner pushes on and if not how do you do it

The head can stay on to do it, but it will be very tricky when you go to slide the timing cover back into place. You may have to drop the oil pan down a little bit, Since the timing cover will be squeezed a little bit between the head and the oil pan when they are tightened. You run the risk of damaging the headgasket seal when installing the cover, be careful.

Once the timing cover is removed, you should be able to remove the e clip on the bottom of the tensioner guide, then just rotate it out to the left and slide it forward.
