Question

my cat had a small rash on his belly, he is constantly licking and biting it. it has now spread to his entire underside. It's very pink almost raw looking. Also, his lip is puffy on one side. Any idea? Thanks, XXX XXXXXX

Hi Tim,

Being an indoor cat - although less likely, infectious causes such as bacteria and mites should be ruled-out. It would be a shame to run many tests or make significant changes if there was a bacterial infection that required an antibiotic.

If there is no infectious cause, just like in people and dogs, cats can have allergies - either environmental (pollen, mold, dust, mites) as well as to food.

If this is the case, and we rule-out infectious causes, you may elect to discuss a food trial with your veterinarian or even a trial course of an antihistamine or steroid to decrease the behaviors and skin issue you are reporting.
