I own apartments. A tenant paid three months rent with a money order, then three days later had the money order cancelled. Is this a crime I can report?
Thank you for using Just Answer. In order to respond to your inquiry, I need to know in what state the money order was tendered.
This was in Albany, Georgia, in Doughtery County.
It is a crime to issue a bad money order in Georgia. However, this applies only where there was insufficient funds. Where, as here, the payment was stopped, you cannot proceed criminally. You can, however, sue the tenant for the amount of the money order, as well as any fees you incurred because payment was stopped.
Please let me know if you need additional clarification.
