Question

Hello, I have a 12 y.o maltese who is suffering from an acute ear infection for more than 10 months. He has been to 2 different vets in these past months, and both prescribed gentomicin and sypnotic, also the ear secretion is dark and hard (like dried blood) and smell like bad foot odor. He doesnt not scratch his ear, but I feel he is not comfortable either. Anyway, I clean everyday his ear with chlorhexiderm flush and apply a gentomicin once a day. It does not cure it, but it makes a little bit better (less gunk). Can somebody offer a different solution? Thanks

Hi, thanks for your question. Are gentamicin and synotic the only medicines that have been used so far?

Answer

OK, thanks. You need to have an Ear Cytology test performed, to see if there's yeast growth in the ears. Yeast will not be treated by the medications you are using, and the problem will only get worse with time without proper medication.

before i do the cytology is there any other treatment i can give him? isn't a sign of yeast infection the unpleasant smell (smells like bad cheese) dark gunk coming out from his ear? if the antibiotics didnt work couldn't i just give the yeast treatment instead of spending more money, time and patience? tks

Accepted Answer

It's up to you, and how much medication you want to subject your pet to without a diagnosis. Clotrimazole is a common medication used for yeast problems in the ears.
