I have windows vista on my gateway desktop. I have set up the guest account as the administrator, and my account as a standard user. However, both user accounts now appear to be frozen in the currant configuration; when I go into the guest account, I cannot change my standard account into a administrator, and I cannot change the guest back to a standard user. I cannot change the parental controls, and I cannot set up a new account from either account.

Please try logging onto the administrator account in safe mode before changing the settings
To do that restart the machine and continously tap F8
Then choose safe mode from the menu and log into the administrator account
Then change the accounts back or the way you want them and test it again

sorry, I did as you instructed, restarted in safe mode, went to my GUEST account (which is established as the administrator, which is unusual), and I attempted to change my standard account to an administrator, etc., and my guest account to a standard account, however everything remains frozen. I also still cannot create a new user account...I get the statement "that account name is not valid, because account names cannot contail ?|{}":;" etc....even though I did not include any of those symbols. still not working

Ok that sounds like the profile settings have been corupted do you have a vista disc?

yes, I have the Gateway Operating System Disc including Vista on it.

Unfortunately that will not work unless it has a repair option on it but most reovery discs do not. So unfortunately I am going to have to opt out and open this to all experts who may know another way.
