Question

I have a a 24" x 60" window at the bottom of my steps. Is there a product I can purchase to put across the window to prevent someone who falls down the steps from crashing through the window?

Hello XXXXXXX, and thank you for your question.

There are window guards that you can purchase - here is a link to one site that offers several types: http://www.window-bars.com/online-store/scstore/window_guard_selector.html
Many other companies offer similar products.

I have to caution though that these products are really not meant for your application. They're typically designed to prevent a child who runs into or pushes against the guard from falling out of the window.
In your situation some commercial window guards may not be sufficient to prevent injury to someone falling down the stairs for two reasons: A) a window guard desiwon't prevent someone who crashes into the window from putting an arm or leg through the glass, and B) some window guards aren't designed for the amount of force that could result from an adult falling down a stair toward the window.

The residential building codes in most locations in the US require a window of that size that is within 5' of the bottom of a stair to have tempered glass. You can determine whether you have tempered glass by looking for an etched notation in one of the window's corners (you may need to stand on a stepstool to see this if it is in an upper corner). If your window is not tempered you should consider having the glass replaced, as this will go a long way to prevent injury from breakage.

I forgot to hit 'positive' before accepting, is there a way to go back to give you positive feed back? Also, in response to your response, other then the child bars and changing to tempered glass (which I am not sure the can even do with a casement window, and if they could I am sure it would be pricey), do you have any other suggestions?

Answer

Hello XXXXXXX,

A casement window can be changed to tempered glass - though depending on the type and manufacturer, sometimes this would be done by replacing the whole sash, vs. reglazing the existing sash.
The window should already be tempered by code, but if it is an older home it may not be.

An alternative to child bars would be a guardrail placed in front of the window - either something of a custom design, or a prefabricated section of guardrail such as would be used along a balcony or similar. This would usually be either metal or wood. If you go with a stock guardrail you should be able to get installation specifications from the manufacturer, for proper anchoring to wall and/or floor.

I hope this information is helpful.
Thank you for the Accept! I am not sure how to go back and leave feedback - I'm not too familiar with the customer interface - but please don't worry about it!
