Question

My cocker got something in her paw and won't walk. I carried home--she weighs 33 lbs. We were walking in the dark and she tried to get something digging in the edge of sidewalk--frog, bug, I don't know. I've gone over her paw very carefully and cannot find anything like a sticker, burr, etc. (used a flashlight). She won't stand up to drink water! She doesn't seem in pain but will not put weight on her paw. Help!

Answer

Hello,

I am sorry your dog is having trouble. This is a tough situation, because your vet is closed, and your dog (while uncomfortable) is not emergently ill. She may have been bitten or stung, or she may have strained a muscle or ligament. It is highly unlikely she has sustained a fracture, but still possible. She may have cracked a toe nail......and even though she is not acting like she is in major pain the fact that she is holding her paw up indicates that she is hurting. You need to decide if she is uncomfortable enough to see an emergency vet tonight, or if she can wait until the morning to be seen by her regular vet. If you decide to watch her and have her seen in the morning, you will need to take her in to the ER right away if she starts to vomit, becomes very itchy, her skin becomes pink or red or if she has facial swelling as these are symptoms of an allergic reaction, sometimes resulting from a bug bite or sting. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Best of luck with your baby girl, I hope she feels better soon. :)

Would it help to soak her paw in warm water? Her toe nails on this hurt paw look more pronounced than on the other one. She does not seem to mind my digging around in her paw as if it does not hurt unless she puts weight on it. I agree she could have received a sting of some kind as she goes after any creature that moves but usually it's a frog or geiko.

Accepted Answer

Soaking in warm water may help, or may not. If you like you can give it a try, it won't hurt anything at all. Make sure the water isn't too hot and don't put anything in it. You will also want to restrict her activity until she can be seen by her vet. If she jumps or climbs with the injury she can make it worse.
