I'll help you through this. Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit Vista? You can find this information by clicking on the Windows logo in the lower left of your screen, Locating Computer, right click on it, and select Properties. The version will appear under System.

Great, let's do a couple of things first. Bookmark this thread in your browser by pressing Control+D. This will allow you to return here when you reboot in the following steps.

Turn off the scanner.

Now download the following software and install: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=298549&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=298547&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2100

Click on the download link halfway down the page.

After the installation, reboot.

Turn the scanner back on. It should recognize the scanner.

Return to this page using your bookmark or Favorites. Let me know.

Did you reboot your computer after installing? Did you have the scanner turned off when installing? I'm sure you did, but I need to verify.

No errors? If not, try a scan again. What software are you opening the scan with or do you have any compatible software the reads scans?

tried a scan. says difficulty communicating with scanning device. softmware is hp photo & imaging software for scanjet 3970. Iused the scan button on the scanner

Posted by John P 163 days and 3 hours ago.

Info Request

Try using the scan function in the software. HP is notorious for the scan button the scanner not talking to the operating system or software. We'll go from there if neither works.

are you frustrated yet

Posted by John P 163 days and 2 hours ago.

Info Request

I'm frustrated because my version of HP Photosmart has the import from a scan function and this new 3.5 doesn't. I'm still working on it. Give me a moment. (I'm not going to give up on you unless I can't find an answer, then maybe another Expert will be able to point you in the right direction in a couple of seconds. Who knows?)

Okay, let's try this, go to the Windows logo. Unplug or power off the scanner. Open Control Panel. Make sure you are in Classic View as earlier, click on Device Manager, Under Imaging Devices, uninstall any device you find there. Reboot (make sure you bookmark this page first with Control+D), then reinstall the driver link I gave you. Post back after you test. If this doesn't work, I'm at a loss and I'll Opt Out.

Posted by John P 163 days and 1 hours ago.

Define: slides? Like film? I can scan anything an optical scanner can scan. It works well too, no cables. Printer, scanning. Even has a fax machine built into it and a copier.

The old fashion slides, like before discs

Overhead projector slides? Mine will scan those. Unless I'm missing something. I'm a science guy, so when I hear slides I think of a microscope.

Sorry, I have no idea about that one. I'm going to assume it won't help as it's only a flatbed scanner. I'll go ahead and put in a request to close this thread. I wish I could have helped you more.
