Great, let's do a couple of things first. Bookmark this thread in your browser by pressing Control+D. This will allow you to return here when you reboot in the following steps.
Turn off the scanner.
Now download the following software and install: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=298549&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=298547&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2100
Click on the download link halfway down the page.
After the installation, reboot.
Turn the scanner back on. It should recognize the scanner.
Return to this page using your bookmark or Favorites. Let me know.

Use the Get Images button.. and select the from scanner option.
Don't feel stupid, I'm going to download the same link just in case I have a different version. Give me a moment.
I'm frustrated because my version of HP Photosmart has the import from a scan function and this new 3.5 doesn't. I'm still working on it. Give me a moment. (I'm not going to give up on you unless I can't find an answer, then maybe another Expert will be able to point you in the right direction in a couple of seconds. Who knows?)
Drive link again: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=298549&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=298547&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2100
I think you have an erroneous driver in there somewhere.
