Question

I just got a cat from the Humane Society 1 week ago. She acts very lethargic all the time. She eats but only if I pick her up and take her to her food. She drinks water normally and uses the bathroom normally. They said she was around 1.5 to 2 years old. I don't know if she is sick or if this is normal. Please help!!

I took her to the vet when I first got her, but they didn't do any blood work. The Humane Society gave me kitten food and said that was what she had been eating, but it wasn't. Since she isn't a kitten I put her on Purina Naturals, but she didn't seem to like it, so I incorporated some Fancy Feast in there as well.

Answer

Dear friend,

May God bless you for saving a shelter kitty!

I know she new but I don''t like lethargy. It will take her about three days to acclimate but she must eat sommething now.

Offer her tuna water to get her started.

Put a drop of pancake syrup in her mouth to raise her blood sugar.

Canned food is best for her:

Cats are attracted to smelly foods - the stronger the better. If she wants tuna, give it to her You can also try fancy feast, clam juice or baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

If she still refuses the tasty food she may be sick and should be reseen by your vet.

It is ok if she picks a safe spot like under a bed and wants to hide til she feels comfy as long as she eats.

Please let me know how she is doing. I hope she will be fine.

Warmest best wishes,

Terri

she ate pretty normally today so far..but when she finishes eating she goes straight back to her spot on the couch and curls up. she isn't interested at all in playing. I do have a pug and they get along fine but I feel like only because she doesn't move.

Answer

As long as she is eating give her a few days to settle in. It usually takes three or four for them to start playing.

Good luck and keep me posted,

Terri
