Question

After 10 years of marriage to a wonderful man who has totally supported and taken care of me while I have lupus, ulcerative colitis and kidney disease, and was but no longer suffering from depression I'm wondering what to do. He lost his high paying professional job a year ago due to the economy and tried to start his own business, which was obviously a no go to everyone who knows him. He began to become out of control and long story short had to be hospitalized against his will on a mental health hold. Now diagnosed with bipolar disease, I can see the signs building up looking back. He's getting ongoing mental health care. His doctor works closely with both of us luckily, his medication has been changed, increased, etc. It's been several months and now he is just plain depressed. We are mid 50s and he has spent all of our retirement savings and run up credit cards. I love him but I'm scared I'll end up homeless with no health insurance. How do I deal with this?

I've been on Wellbutrin for many years. I've had counseling over the years for my problems but don't have the energy or will right now for it. Looking for advice other than counseling to get a clue as to whether this situation might get better. We haven't had sex in 6 months and it used to be multiple times per week. I can deal with some of this, but not all.

Hi Calalilly,

Wow. What a blow to your life! You need to get support for yourself and get some feedback, and you can do this without going into counseling. There are lots of blogs and family support sites for bipolar where people talk about exactly what you're going through.

You will have to sort it out - there is no other way around it unfortunately. You said you'd been depressed before and had Wellbutrin. Maybe it's time to look at your medication from a fresh standpoint. You might be having battle fatigue from all the struggles which can mess with stabilized depression.

You are also grieving the loss of your life as you had planned it. You've lost the marriage that you knew. You lost the secure future that you had, and you've lost the husband that you knew. Going through the stages of grief & loss will be effecting you right now.
Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression & finally Acceptance.

It's going to take time, wellness for yourself and supportive relationships for you to figure this out. You're not alone. Connect with others online if not in real life and tell your story.

Thanks for this opportunity to help you out today. If you would, please fill out the little feedback form after accepting.
