Radiator, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment

  • T10007 Refractometer
  • VAG1306 Drip tray for VAG 1202A
  • VAG1331 Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm (3 7 to 37 ft. lbs.), or equivalent
  • VAS 5024 Assembly tool for spring-type clip or VAG1921 Hose clip pliers

Removing

  • Drain coolant. See: Service and Repair
  • Remove front bumper. See: Body and Frame\Service and Repair
  • Disconnect coolant hoses from radiator.
  • Disconnect thermo-switch harness connectors.
  • Remove ribbed belt tensioning element, Refer to Drive Belt, Service and Repair
  • Remove radiator mounting bolts and take out radiator with fans attached.

Vehicles with A/C, additional removal information

WARNING: Do NOT open the A/C refrigerant circuit!

Note: To prevent damage to the A/C condenser and refrigerant lines/hoses, ensure that the lines and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.

  • Remove retaining clamp(s) from refrigerant lines.
  • Before removing upper radiator support, fasten to body.
  • Remove A/C condenser from radiator and fasten to lock carrier.
  • Secure condenser to body so that refrigerant lines/hoses are not stressed.
  • Remove radiator downward.

Installing

Note: Installation is carried out in the reverse order of the removal procedure. When installing, note the following:

  • Fill with coolant.
  • Electrical connections and routing. Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
