Question

I've been feeding a stray cat who had kittens under our front porch. The kittens are 2.5 weeks old and growing well. The cat is eating alot and also drinking alot. She's very friendly and comes out to be petted when we go out to the porch. Just now, she came out from under the porch, and she's panting. Her fur also feels damp. It is very hot and humid outside today, is that most likely the cause?

Today is the first time I've noticed the panting. She is very small, and I'm just guessing her age. She always seems to breathe fast though.

Dear friend,

May God bless you for helping her and her babies?

Is she still panting?

Will she eat anything?

Thanks,

Terri

She seems to have stopped panting. She just ate and drank some water too, which she does every time we go out there and she comes to see us. When I first when out there and noticed her panting, she came out from under the porch, which is enclosed on all sides, except for where the step is. When I went back out there after I posted my question, she came out from under my car. I'm thinking now that maybe she was just overheated from being under the porch with the kitty pile, and then when she was out in the fresh air for awhile, it cooled her down.

Answer

Dear friend,

I am sorry she had some trouble but I think she is ok. A cats appetite is the best barometer of her health

Yes she is getting over heated under there Plus if she is lying in dirt that is not sanitary for the babies or her.

Perhaps you can provide a cardboard box she can move her kittens into?

Line the bottom with paper towels that can be changed once a day.

Offer her tuna water when you open a can and some milk as well.

Please let me know how the entire furry is doing.

Many blessings and love always,

Terri

I have had a cardboard box out there for her since the day she had her kittens. Yes, she is laying in sand and leaves under the porch. The only way we can get the kittens out is to tear apart our deck, since it is bordered by the house on three sides. They are at the very back, by the wall of the house. We are waiting until the kittens come out on their own, since she obviously won't bring them out until then. At that time, we are considering locking them in the garage to keep them safe from the racoons and hawks and the like that inhabit our area.
I thought that cows milk is bad for cats, because it gives them diarrhea? I'm feeding her the Eukanuba kitten food, because it doesnt' contain fillers, especially corn gluten meal.
I'm concerned that we haven't been able to have any contact with the kittens, because we want to find homes for them. If we can't get to them to have them learn to use a litterbox, and be used to humans.....it will be difficult to find someone willing to take them.

Accepted Answer

I would not take the deck apart. That won't be necessary. She will bring them out when they are ready to eat.She trusts you so she will be proud to show you her babies.

At that point, yes, I would confine the whole group.

Nursing moms can safely have some milk.

When the babies are ready you should provide canned food as it is easier to wean them on that.

Don't worry you will have no problem socializing the when the time is right

Best of luck to you,

Terri
