Question

I have an 11 y/o chihuahua - she has a squeaky cough - sometimes acts like she is trying to cough upsomething. its everyday - sometimes when she first wakes up and other times running up a hill or other activity but not always. otherwise her appetite is good and sh'e still playful. she is a long haired chihuahu.

OK, thanks. In small breed dogs with a cough, we worry about a few different illnesses.

- Heart disease can cause a cough, but from the lack of other symptoms, it doesn't sound like that's a likely explanation at this time.

- Bronchitis is common in older dogs, often as a side effect of exposure to allergens such as tobacco smoke, or other irritants in the air over their lifetimes.

- Collapsing Trachea is sometimes noted in small breed dogs, and results in a honking or squeaking cough.

I'd recommend x-rays of the chest and neck to see if there's any explanation for the symptoms. Of course, the weight is also putting excess strain on her respiratory system, so I'd suggest cutting back on the treats and food.
