Question

I just bought a 2001 325i BMW. The previous owner put a 330 engine in it, I dont know the year or type of motor it is. When checking the ECM i found out the computer thats still in the car is a 2001 325i ECM, So who ever changed the engine dident change the computer that the 330 came with... Now my question is, Can a 325i computer be compatible with a 330 bmw engine? If so, what main parts do i have to change to make the engine run right? I did find out the fuel injectors for a 325i and a 330 engine have different part numbers...ty

Accepted Answer

Hi, the 330i engine is not designed to be ran by a 325i ecu. The 330 has a longer stroke, so it will require more fuel and air to run properly. If it's running on a 325i ecu, all calibrations will be slightly less than they should be, and it could run too lean.
In short the mechanicals will not match up with the computer calibrations.

The 325i uses black colored injectors with the part number you listed.
The 330i uses Purple colored injectors with a slightly larger diameter pintle, for more fuel.

This is a tricky situation, not sure why someone would do this.
It would be best to run it off a 330i computer (DME), but you will have the problem of the anti theft system. For it to work, you will need a the dme, ews module, and the key and ignition lock cylinder as a matched set, or the anti theft system will not allow the engine to start.

You could try swapping out the injectors for 330i ones, and the 330i air mass meter part # 13627567451. The 325i uses a different air mass meter, and intake boot.
But I don't think many people have done this before, so it will be hard to gurantee anything to work 100%
