Question

Hi I bought a BMW X3 (2007) with 12K miles on it. there are a couple things that have botherd me which i can't get an answer from dealership. There is a fan noise (sounds like a computer fan noise) that comes out from the driver side around the instrumental panel. the Dealer is telling me it is normal. Is it normal from your perspective? Secondly, the brakes do make squeeking noise during slow accelaring to stop the car. Dear is saing they could not replcate the problem. What do your think. thank you

Hi, this sound from under the dash is likely coming from what is call the Ebox fan. This fan takes cooler air from the passenger cabin, and blows it into the box which houses the engine computer, to keep it cool.
This fan should not be heard under normal conditions, unless you are listening under the dash for it. I think the fan is faulty, or possibly some debris got caught in it, and is causing the noise you are hearing.

For the brake squeaking noise. It's hard to get BMW warranty to pay for this type of complaint, since it's usually just the brake compound that is slightly noisey. They feel some noise is normal intermittently.
I would try making some hard stops (traffic permitting) to seat the pads in a bit.
If this doesn't work, then you can have the pads removed, deglazed, and have a stop squeal compound applied to the surface. This will usually help, but the dealer will have to goodwill the time, internally pay for it, or ask you to pay.

If you can ride with the shop foreman or tech, and reproduce the noise, they would be more inclined to fix the problem for you.
