Question

I am having a unique problem with radio/sound system in my 2004 Z4. The car has 30,000 miles. Recently - when I drive the car for about 15 minutes, I then start to get a popping sound from the various speakers (with the radio off). The loud popping noise goes from one speaker to another with the radio off. The popping sound is low at first but gets very loud quickly. This goes on for about 10-15 minutes and then it stops. I can then turn the radio on and it works.

Answer

Hi, please check the amplifier for signs of water damage. The amp is mounted vertically next to the battery. It's common to get water in that area, and ruin the amplifer.

Is there a fix for that problem that BMW has corrected?

Answer

The third brake light lense tends to crack, and could leak water in there. That is the only common leak. Any other ones will need to be diagnosed by removing trunk carpet panels and running water off the lid with it closed. Then rechecking with a light to trace the source of the leak. Also sometimes liquids get spilled in the trunk, and cause the same fate.

I'm not quite understanding your response. What/where is the third brake light lens that would leak onto the amplifier.

Accepted Answer

The third brake light lense is mounted on the rear of the trunk lid. It comes on with the brake lights. If you inspect the lense you may see cracks or missing pieces.

But I would check the amp first to see if you actually have water entry or not. Just lift up the trunk floor panel, and you will see the battery, and the black amplfier mounted next to it. See if there is any water, or residue down in there.
