Question

I have a 1991 BMW 318i and my power steering fluid was leaking. I took it to my mechanic and he said that the seals in the steering rack are broken. He also said that I can get a remanufacted assembly and that if I wanted one that I could rely on I should order it from ZF but they are very expensive. The remanufactered steering rack I wound was from A1 and they offer a 36k warranty on it. Are the remanufacted ones reliable? If they break then I would spend money on labor to fix it again. How much time would it take to install a new one and how much would you estimate one from ZF to cost since they are the original makers. Any suggestions would help Thanks, Dennis

Answer

Hi,

The price for a rack and pinion unit from ZF will run $577-586, plus $100 core charge, depending on whether you have airbags or not. The remanufactured ZF units do NOT include the inner tie rods, boots, or lock plates. You would have to either re-use yours, or purchase new ones. But if there is nothing wrong with the boots or inner tie rods, there is no reason to replace them.

Whether you go with A1, ZF, or another brand, it will be a remanufactured unit. I have used A1 reman rack & pinion units many times with great success.

As long as the rack&pinion in yours right now is the original unit, you do have the option of ordering a rebuild kit:

You would just need to find a shop that knows how to rebuild the rack and pinion.

Labor time will be around 4 hrs

HI thanks for the answer my mechanic said to get tie rods so I guess the boots are fine. The $100 core charge is that a credit after they receive my original core? I found this A1 steering rack system. Would this do? And it comes withe a 36k warranty but my mechanic said that he might not trust this other than a ZF and that if it breaks I'll have to pay for labor again to send it back and reinstall another one. I'm wondering if it's better to just go with the ZF and get it done. Problem is that the car is not worth more than $3500 and it's in mint condition other than to fix the fabric in the back seat. You think it would be worth more if I kept it in mint condition longer. What would the break point be for me to get rid of it in terms of the next thing breakign down in your opinion.

Thanks a lot for your advice

Thanks for your reply My mechanic suggested i need the tie rods so I guess the boots are fine unless I should change them anyways if they're likely to break. I found this A1 rack

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/BMW/318i/A1_Cardone/Steering_Rack/1991/Base/4_Cyl_1-dot-8L/A1261821.html?tlc=Brakes%2C+Suspension+%26+Steering

It some with a credit for the core and it ends up being considerably cheaper than the ZF. Problem is that if it breaks before the warranty then I stil have to pay for labor to reinstall and to take it out so i'm wondering if it's better to stick with a ZF since they are more trusted. The car is in mint condition and not worth more than $3500. It just needs the back seat reupholstering. What do you think the break point is for me to get rid of it when the next thing breaks? I've already put a new top changed the tie rods, brakes, shocks and gaskets. Are the steering rack the only tie rods in the car since I changed tie rods last time? I have accepted you answer as well to let you know. I'm not sure if they payment went throught or not.

Hi,

Your vehicle has outer and inner tie rods, so you need to check to see which were replaced, but if he didnt mention them being bad, you should be fine using the existing ones. Like I said, I have had great success with A1 Cardone products over the years. I have not had one come back with a problem within the warranty time, so if it were mine, I would feel perfectly comfortable installing the A1 Cardone unit.

As far as how much more to invest in it before its too much, it depends mostly on how long you want to keep it. I would probable put the cut-off at either engine rebuild or transmission rebuild. Other than that, most repairs are reasonable and as long as engine and transmission hold up, worth the repairs.
