Answer

Thanks for replying. If this bleeding isn't constant, then a small amount of bleeding from the penis on/off in an intact dog isn't always that much to worry about, especially if only occurring when they are around or aware of a female in heat, or just an overly exciteable dog. Right now, keep a good eye on your dog and see if it indeed only occurs when erect (semi or full), is not excessive but small amounts only, and that all else seems normal (urinating normally, active and responsive, no bruising anywhere, not drinking more/less, etc). Often this small amount of bleeding doesn't cause significant problems. Things that could be a problem: In intact males, prostate problems. Though an enlarged prostate which causes small amount of bleeding isn't a big concern, it certainly can become worse and could become a cancerous problem. A thorough rectal exam by your vet is a good idea along with an accurate history of when these symptoms showed up. Neutering the dog can make a significant difference in the dog's prognosis. Urinary tract infections can cause small amounts of blood from the penis tip, though more often after urinating and not when erect. A rarity for it to be this, but another possibility nonetheless. Internal trauma or hemorrhage, especially those within the urinary tract, kidneys, or a general bleeding disorder, could account for blood from the penis. Bleeding disorders obviously would be the biggest concern, and it's important to make sure this bleeding doesn't increase in frequency or amount, and that your dog has no signs of bruising anywhere (small purple dots to large reddish/purple areas on the skin- anywhere on the skin). Weakness would be noted as well after some time, and can be a life threatening problem requiring quick vet assistance if seen. If he's acting normal, this is only seen in times of excitement, and not excessive, my suggestion would be to keep an eye on it and note any changes, and ask your vet to do a rectal exam or to tell you if the prostate is more enlarged than it should be for his age. In no cases of bleeding from the penis is remaining intact a smart idea; what your vet may have meant is that the bleeding noticed is not uncommon nor a worry at this stage because he is not neutered. Hope this makes sense. Best wishes! Christine

Answer

Definitely speak to your vet about these options and ask if a coagulation test (clotting test) has been done, the most serious of the potential problems. You can reply back at any time. If the question says 'closed', just email XXXXXXX@XXXXXXXXXX.XXX to have it reopened. Good luck to you and your dog. Christine
