I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I'm sorry that your lawyer is not performing the tasks that he should.

I would recommend speaking to your lawyer about why he is not prepared. If he is just lazy, perhaps he can "step it up" a notch. If his schedule is busy, his lack of preparation is not going to change going forward, and you need to find a new laywer.

And yes, he needs to give you back your documentation.

Ask him for your money back. If he refuses, tell him you are thinking of lodging a bar complaint against him. Don't be mean, just be frank and honest about the fact that he has taken all of the money you have that you can spend on a lawyer. Hopefully, he will refund it and you can get a lawyer who knows what he is doing.
