Question

My 1 year old English Bulldog often gags and vomits small amounts early in the morning when she wakes up. Sometimes it is undigested kibble, but lately has been small amounts of mucus. Our vet says it is most likely allergy related and she probably has mucus that is upsetting her stomach. Can you offer any suggestions to avoid this happening every morning?

Answer

Dear friend,

I am sorrry your girl has this trouble. It is pretty normal for Bulldogs to swallow mucus. However, it sounds like she has acid reflx or GERD

Give her half a pepsid (famatodine) with her dinner.

Leave her something during the night so her tummy is not empty for hours as that causes acid to build up.

She can have a few biscuits or a slice of fiber bread.

Try grain free food @ www.petfooddirect.com

I hope she is better very soon.

Warmest best wishes,

Teri

Hi Teri,

We do feed her wheat-free food and treats- is grain free different? She gets 1-2 treats before she goes to bed each night already. Since she is wheat free, is there a certain type of bread we could try? Is giving her the Pepsid at the same time as Benadryl ok with her dinner?

Thank you for your help,

Kim

Hi Kim,

Yes, she can have the pepsid at the same time as the benedryl

The important thing is to give her something at night so the acid does not build in an empty tummy.

Use dog biscuts or cut up turkey if you do not want her to have whole wheat or bran bread.

Please let me know how she does.

Best wishes for her,

Terri

PS just LOVE that bulldog face!!
